If you read my previous post (My Fall Bucket List), then you’ll know that my biggest fear during the not-summer-months, is being stuck indoors with nothing to do. This can lead to depression or make your anxiety worse and overall, it can affect your mental health. I love Winter when the snow hits because there’s so much to do! Both inside and out, Winter CAN be fun and NOT a snooze-fest! What I love most about Winter is, getting cozy with your favourite person or furbaby, catching snowflakes and eating/making baked goods for days!
Here is a list that I compiled of 17 activities you can do this winter to keep those positive thoughts flowing 🙂
Let your inner kid shine, grab a toboggan and head down those slopes! Or, head over to your nearest mountain to go tubing! If you live in the area of Vancouver, check out Mount Seymour or Cypress for tubing.
Build A Snowman
Either in your front yard, backyard, school playground or parking lot, do you want to build a snowman? When I was little, my dad used to take my little brother and I to the school field and we would build an igloo by shaping the snow into brick-like rectangles and then placing them on top of each other to form a dome. This took hours by the way, but when we were done, we would crawl inside and it was the coolest thing ever! As long as the snow sticks, you can create anything you want!
Have A Snowball Fight
While you’re building a snowman, why not pick up some extra snow and aim it at your best friend? Take the fight to the woods, someone’s backyard, build a fort, be creative with it! The best stories start with snow so snap some pictures and make some memories!
Go Ice Skating
When was the last time you went ice skating?! It’s the perfect activity to do this season after work during the week or on the weekend with friends or family! There’s always a local recreation center in every town so look yours up to find the nearest skating rink.
Set Goals For The New Year
The year is coming to a close and for some, that can be tough. To increase happiness, setting goals for the new year can bring excitement! This allows you to have something to look forward to and it can also help build mastery along the way. Some examples for the new year could be telling yourself you’re beautiful every morning, eating healthier, going on more walks, or spending more time with your family. Write out as many goals as you can think of and try to complete them before the end of the year.
The smell of fresh cookies could brighten anyone’s day! Start the week off with something to look forward to, bake cookies the night before so you have some fresh for when you’re finished work. I love to bake cookies with my beau, he’s the best helper!
Watch Christmas Movies
What better way to enjoy Christmas movies other than with the cookies you just baked! Mmm…fresh warm cookies… I like to make a list on my phone of all the traditional Christmas movies I want to watch so I don’t get frustrated trying to pick out a movie. If I’m feeling a bit down or if the depression comes out, I always find watching a happy movie to lift my spirits. Try watching a happy Christmas movie and see how it affects you 🙂
Host A Winter Party
Another way to keep your spirits up is to surround yourself with people who make you happy. Host a winter party! Create a theme and make it fun! Encourage your guests to dress up and have contests, play games or have a cook-off.
Make A Handmade Gift
It doesn’t have to be Christmas day before you can give someone a gift. Making something from scratch means you put your heart and creative thoughts into it. It’s cold this season, make a blanket for your mom or someone who you think needs one, stuffed toy for your pet or something to keep the hubby warm. The gesture is always appreciated and it will put a smile on their face and in return give you warm butterflies inside 🙂
Do An Outdoor Winter Photoshoot
Get your creative side flowing and do an outdoor winter photoshoot! Play around with poses, outfits, and makeup! Style your hair different ways or ask your hubby to join in. Play around in the snow and have fun with it!
Visit A Local Museum
This is another great activity to get you out of the house and exploring and learning new things. There are so many different kinds of museums to adventure in and get excited about! I would really love to go to the Maritime Museum in Vancouver.
There are just some days where the rain won’t stop pouring and we will have to make do with what we have indoors. That day would be an excellent day to build mastery and make some stew. Get creative and use ingredients only available in your house or host a stew-making party!
Ride A Snowmobile
Get out of your comfort zone and try something new! Riding a snowmobile will be a memory you won’t forget. Stay overnight at a resort and take a day trip-guided tour through the mountains!
Sit By A Fire
I love sitting cozily by the fire while I watch the snow fall. It’s one of my favourite things to do and always puts a smile on my face 🙂 Whether it’s a bonfire outside or sitting next to the fire inside, hearing the crackling of the fire and being surrounded by warm blankets creates such a pleasant memory.
I love making my cocoa with vanilla almond milk on the stove with marshmallows and chocolate syrup! Pairing warm cocoa, mittens and a drive to the mountaintop is one of my favourite activities to do every winter.
Try A New Restaurant
This could be a great activity for date night! Research some restaurants you haven’t been to before and make a fun night out of it! Or you could even take it up to the next level and go out of town for the weekend. Try a new restaurant in a different city!
Buy A Pair Of Fuzzy Slippers
Something I’m lacking right now and my poor feet are so cold! Don’t be like me, make your toes and feet happy by getting some fuzzy slippers this winter! I don’t have carpet everywhere in my house and one thing I know that would make my mornings better is NOT walking on cold floors.
Are you a winter person or a summer person? What do you do to keep yourself happy in the winter time? Did you try anything off this list, if so how did it go? Share your thoughts below!
